The Importance of Friendship

The Importance of Friendship
Daniel Song

Not long ago, I made the decision to read another dystopian novel, as the previous one I read had peaked my interest. This time, I picked up the book, The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner. This story revolves around a maze, in which people are dropped into. They have no memory of their life prior to this, and have to survive in the maze while also trying to find a way out. People are slowly put into the maze, and monitored by outside sources. The book starts when the main character, Thomas, is put into the maze, and has to go about life in a whole different environment. One major theme in this book is friendship. Friendship is a key part of the success of those in the maze. Friendship is what keeps many together, and is evident all throughout the book.

Ever since the beginning, it becomes clear that friendship is important. When Thomas first enters the maze, he makes friends with a boy named Chuck, who helps him go about life. This bond between them benefits the both of them, as Thomas gets to know more about this environment. A perhaps more important friendship, is between Thomas and Minho. Minho is one of the keepers, one of the members of a self-imposed council that is sort of the authority in this area. This friendship between them allows for Thomas to obtain a more prominent role among those in the maze which eventually leads to them escaping.

Friendship in this story is not only important for the main character, Thomas, but also for all those in the maze. Because they are isolated in a maze with no contact with the outside, building relationships with one another is important in keeping a sustaining functional society. As the story progresses, they become more and more desperate to escape, and friendship is what kept everyone together. The story would have never progressed if it weren't for the bonds made with others in the maze.

Overall, this book is an interesting dystopian novel that really calls attention to the importance of friendship. It has a fairly intriguing plot, with decent character development and a fascinating theme. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dystopian novels or books with themes about friendship.

  1. I think you did a great job focusing in on friendship. I have personally read the Maze Runner and I also think friendship is and important theme. Additionally, I like how you talked about how they would not have been successful without friendship, as it shows how important it is.

  2. You did a really good job of explaining the significance that the theme of friendship had on this story. You showed why it was important, since they were all in the maze, and how friendship helped the characters in the novel overcome their obstacles, developing the plot. Good job.

  3. I liked your concise description of the plot. From your examples, I can clearly understand how essential having strong relationships with others would be in this scenario. I think having good friends would be even more important than personally having resources in this case, because being trapped alone would be much more difficult than being trapped with others. I enjoyed your blog post, and will consider reading this book.

  4. I have read this book before, and I personally agree with your analysis of friendship being a major theme in the novel. Your evidence along with your personal opinion really cements the argument in fact and prevents from becoming a flimsy intuition. The textual evidence you brought was also very convincing and relevant. Overall, good review.
