An Agatha Christie Mystery

An Agatha Christie Mystery
By Addison McClure

Recently I have been reading the mystery novel Murder on the Orient Express. The story follows the work of detective Hercule Poirot as he boards and travels Orient Express. While the ride starts off smoothly, suddenly Poirot is alerted that there has been a murder. The victim of this murder is the wealthy Samuel Edward Ratchett. Now that the train has come to a halt, Poirot must find out who the murderer is. He begins interviews with each of the train passengers and discovers they have connections with the victim that he did not know about before. Now here are three reasons why you should consider reading this murder mystery:

1. The story line is well thought out and it keeps you engaged. One of the aspects of the novel that makes it so interesting is its sudden twists. Murder mysteries can be boring if the reader already knows what's going to happen, someone is murdered and someone is caught, but Agatha Christie does a great job at showing how to keep readers interested. She does this through making the characters, that are just thought to be passengers on the train, have deeper connections to the main story.

2. The novel gives you an opportunity to solve the murder along with Hercule Poirot through its formatting. The chapters of the book are separated into three parts, the facts, the evidence, and reflection. During the first part of the book the reader is presented with all the events leading up to the actual murder. In part two of the novel, the reader is then given the evidence of each passenger on the train, their luggage, and the weapon. I found this part to be interesting because it feels as though you are solving the murder as well. In the final part of the book, Hercule Poirot thinks deeply about every single piece of evidence he received. In this section of the novel all the evidence begins to make sense and the reader, along with Poirot, begin to connect the dots.

3. Each character has a unique story. When boarding the train, it just seems as though the passengers are bystanders. After Poirot begins the investigation though, you discover that each person on the train is important to the plot. Agatha Christie created an intriguing novel by having each character be unique. The many different personalities of the passengers makes the dialogue of the book so much more interesting.
